Grade Level 4 Language Arts Spelling Teacher Text
The Grade 4 spelling curriculum builds upon the procedures and skills students have obtained in Grade 1-3 and extends these so students become better able to spell not only assigned spelling words but words they encounter in other subject areas and outside school. To accomplish this, there are two unique features of Grade 4 spelling. First, students learn five spelling rules. These five rules were selected because (a) the rules fit a wide variety of words with few exceptions and (b) the rules apply to words commonly misspelled. By learning the rules and how to apply them to untaught words, students will become better spellers. The second unique feature of Grade 4 spelling is that only 18 spelling lessons are pre-written. This does not mean that students have spelling lessons for only 18 weeks of the year. Rather, teachers will create spelling lists from other subject areas and/or frequently misspelled words. This will teach students how to integrate their spelling knowledge and skills into all aspects of their lives.
